One of Major League Baseball’s standout players in the trade market might be out for the rest of the season. Shea Langeliers, the Athletics catcher enjoying a stellar year, has suffered a torn meniscus, according to ESPN. This injury could sideline him for the remainder of the season.
Langeliers, 28, sustained the knee injury while running the bases. The team is currently discussing whether he should undergo surgery to repair the tear. If surgery is chosen, ESPN states Langeliers’ 2026 campaign will come to an end.
As a result, teams interested in acquiring Langeliers will likely cease pursuit, as he is regarded as one of the best catchers in MLB. Despite holding a 44-60 record, the A’s were not planning to trade Langeliers, showing the significant value he brings to the team.
Langeliers recently represented the Athletics at his first All-Star Game. His performance this season plays a crucial role while the team contends with other player injuries like Nick Kurtz, Brent Rooker, and Jacob Wilson.
This season, Langeliers maintains a .263 batting average, a .332 on-base percentage, and a .497 slugging percentage. His .829 OPS includes 23 home runs and 51 RBIs. These statistics reflected the team’s hopes following a successful 2025 with 31 home runs and a .861 OPS.
Langeliers appeared set to achieve more career highs before the injury curtailed his progress. Teams aiming for postseason advancements might feel disappointed as they hoped the A’s might reconsider trading him before the deadline. The New York Yankees, who are searching for catchers, might have considered Langeliers.
With Langeliers unavailable, teams in need of catchers might shift focus to other players like Hunter Goodman from the Colorado Rockies and Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles.
The Athletics must continue with Jonah Heim, who will now take a starting role due to Langeliers’ absence. Heim, involved in trade discussions for his experience, may be less available as he moves into this critical role.
