Steve Smith Sr. to Join ESPN After NFL Network Merger

Following the recent merger with the NFL Network, ESPN has announced staff changes, including filling roles left vacant by Cam Newton and Karl Ravech. Former Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith Sr. is slated to join ESPN studio programming.

Smith will have a recurring role on popular shows such as “Get Up,” “First Take,” and “NFL Live.” This move is part of ESPN’s strategy to restructure and bring fresh perspectives to its programs.

Smith, known for his intense playing style, also had a stint with the Baltimore Ravens. Since retiring in 2016, he has worked with the NFL Network. He co-hosts a podcast, “The 89 Show,” named after his jersey number, alongside NFL Network insider James Palmer. The podcast dissects wide receiver play from a player’s perspective, while Palmer provides insights based on his front-office connections.

Smith has been vocal in his criticism of certain players, most notably with former Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. He called Jeudy “just a guy” and openly doubted his performance as a first-round pick, leading to a public feud. Despite attempts to apologize, the tension between them persisted.

Smith also had a well-documented rift with ex-teammate Cam Newton, although they eventually reconciled on a special episode of “The 89 Show.” This personal history adds an intriguing layer to Smith’s commentary and presence on ESPN.
