Cubs Trade for Pitcher David Peterson Amid Rotation Struggles

The Chicago Cubs have acquired pitcher David Peterson from the New York Mets, seeking to reinforce their pitching staff following key injuries. Peterson, now 30, struggled this season after losing his position in the Mets’ rotation. He carried a 6.09 ERA and a negative Wins Above Replacement (WAR) by June 23. Charged with six losses, he emerged as the Cubs’ main prospect for improving their beleaguered lineup.

The trade involved minor league player Cole Mathis, a 22-year-old first baseman/designated hitter with an impressive .860 OPS in 25 games at High-A South Bend. The Cubs plan to incorporate Peterson promptly into their lineup. This decision follows injuries to pitchers Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera, which threatened the team’s playoff chances.

Currently, the Cubs hold a 43-37 record, sitting seven games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central division. If the season concluded today, they would secure the third Wild Card position in the National League.

Despite Peterson’s challenges in 2026, his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) of 3.85 is nearly aligned with his career average of 3.91. This metric suggests potential improvement, given the Cubs’ strong defense compared to the Mets’. Peterson, known for inducing ground balls, showed promise in 2025 with career-high innings (168.2), strikeouts (150), and starts (30).

If needed, the Cubs might transition Peterson to the bullpen, a familiar role for him. In 2024, Peterson contributed in relief during the Mets’ journey to the National League Championship Series, recording a 2.92 ERA in October postseason appearances.

Peterson’s arrival fills a void in the Cubs’ rotation, which was reduced to three pitchers: Shota Imanaga, Colin Rea, and Javier Assad, following Cabrera and Brown’s injuries. Matthew Boyd is expected to return from the injured list on June 25, offering further strength to the team.
