Time-Restricted Eating May Benefit Brain Health

Eating all meals within an eight-to-nine-hour window each day might offer brain health benefits beyond weight loss. This conclusion stems from research presented at the NUTRITION 2026 conference, hosted by the American Society for Nutrition in National Harbor, Maryland. Participants who restricted their eating window showed cognitive improvements over six months, despite losing a similar amount of weight as those on a typical eating schedule.

“We are confident the benefit arises from meal timing itself,” explained Sue Shapses, a professor at Rutgers University and Rutgers-RWJ Medical Center, who led the study. “Both groups lost approximately 8 percent body weight, but the cognitive benefit was significantly greater in those who ate within an 8-hour window compared to those who ate over 12 hours.” However, Shapses cautioned the results were limited to women with overweight or obesity who were actively losing weight.

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia forms are increasingly common, especially as populations age. Past studies have connected diet and lifestyle habits to dementia risk, but few examined if altering these habits could reduce the risk. To investigate, researchers studied 47 overweight or obese women aged 50 to 79. All participants followed a diet reducing daily intake by 500 calories as part of a weight-loss program.

Twenty-six women followed a time-restricted eating plan, consuming food within no more than nine hours daily, mostly between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. This resulted in an average 8.2-hour eating window. The remaining participants adhered to a more conventional schedule, eating over roughly 12 hours each day on average.

After six months, women in both groups lost about 15 pounds on average, indicating weight loss wasn’t the differentiator. Differences instead appeared in cognitive performance. Women restricting their eating to eight or nine hours daily excelled in tests measuring spatial planning and problem-solving abilities. They also showed a tendency to make fewer mistakes on memory and learning tasks, although these improvements were not statistically significant.

The study suggested participants might have improved at remembering daily information and reduced errors linked to memory, attention, and problem-solving. Additionally, researchers noted a correlation between reducing the eating window and cognitive improvements.

Shapses mentioned practicality for those unable to adhere to a strict daily schedule. “If they can’t follow this daily due to events or dinners, it’s acceptable to deviate occasionally,” she stated, acknowledging that study participants also deviated at times.

The researchers emphasized the study’s small scale and preliminary nature. “We’ll continue our analysis and submit a full-length manuscript for peer review and publication,” Shapses remarked.
