Even before these jerseys were officially available for purchase, one fan from the Philadelphia area made headlines with his unique way of showing support. This fan, Joey Abel, a devoted Sixers enthusiast, created his own version of the jersey in an unusual manner, as reported by Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

‘Philly Toughness’

Abel, who resides in New York and endured the New York Knicks’ recent championship, learned about LeBron James joining his favorite team while heading to the beach with his family. Driven by excitement, he wanted to express his enthusiasm in a memorable way, as explained by Coffey. Using his nephews’ blue zinc sunscreen stick, he asked his sister to write “James” and “23” on his back in the design of a basketball jersey.

Abel then refrained from applying sunscreen to the rest of his back. Reflecting on his decision, he told Coffey, “I was just like, ‘How can I get a LeBron James jersey as fast as possible?’ And for some reason, that’s where my mind went.” About an hour later, after removing the sunscreen, his family discovered the jersey outline had seared into his skin, creating a semi-permanent tribute.

Coffey noted that the weather that day was mildly cloudy and in the high 70s, with conditions described as “perfect for a roast.” Nonetheless, sunscreen is recommended even on cloudy days to prevent sunburn.

Images of Abel’s sunburn have circulated online, drawing both attention and reactions. Despite his family’s discomfort and his own pain, Abel takes pride in his symbol of allegiance. “It does hurt, but I did it, right?” he commented. “I’m going to have to keep it. I don’t really want it to fade as fast. Philly toughness, like LeBron’s going to learn.”
