GOP Proposal Would Prevent Fauci’s Return to Federal Service

2 weeks ago 0

A new proposal from House Republicans aims to prevent Dr. Anthony Fauci from ever working for the federal government again. This follows his recent appearance at a Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing, where he invoked the Fifth Amendment over 100 times. The hearing was chaired by Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, a known critic of Fauci.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Rich McCormick from Georgia, seeks to bar Fauci from resuming federal roles. It also opens the possibility of criminal prosecution. According to McCormick, if someone does not answer questions about their actions, similar to workplace accountability, they should face termination. His bill, titled the STOP the SWAMP Act, targets individuals who refuse to answer certain questions during federal inquiries or are convicted of perjury.

McCormick stated in a video shared with Fox News Digital, “We saw him evade so many questions, pleading the Fifth… that’s fine, that’s your constitutional right. But you also have the right, if your till comes up short at Burger King, when your boss asks you why are you short $20 in your cash register — if you plead the Fifth, that’s your… ability, but I can fire you.”

The proposed legislation also empowers Congress members to refer witnesses for prosecution if they unlawfully withhold information. Though Fauci faces no criminal charges, Paul’s committee seeks to hold him in contempt of Congress amid new scrutiny over his management of the COVID-19 pandemic. This follows the release of Fauci’s diary, revealing insights into his role and influence during the crisis.

Diary entries disclosed before the hearing show Fauci reflecting on his public presence and discussing the pandemic’s origin. Notably, he seemed to credit himself with influencing school closures, a highly debated measure during the pandemic. Yet, Fauci maintained before the House Oversight Committee in January 2024, “I did not close the schools.”

Fauci, previously the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984-2022, became a key figure in the U.S. COVID-19 response, attracting both praise and criticism. As scrutiny continues, the political debate around his legacy and decisions remains intense.

The Fox News article, authored by Elizabeth Elkind, provides expanded coverage of these developments. Elkind is known for her in-depth reporting on the House of Representatives, with past contributions to Daily Mail and CBS News.
