FIFA’s U-Turn: Infantino Abandons Stake Sale Proposal After Backlash

FIFA president Gianni Infantino reversed his plan to sell a stake in FIFA’s commercial and event operations following widespread criticism. Infantino emphasized that the project created divisions counter to FIFA’s objective of uniting and improving football, leading to the decision to halt the proposal.

Opposition came from UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), with UEFA threatening to boycott FIFA competitions if the proposal continued. FIFA initially defended its plan, asserting commitment to open consultation, but faced further pressure when AFC sided with UEFA and Concacaf.

Infantino’s proposal of FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE) involved selling a 21% stake to investors, potentially raising $4.2 billion to benefit member associations through the FIFA Fast-Forward Programme. This aimed to increase development funding to over $10 billion in four years. However, strong opposition put the plan at risk, threatening FIFA’s unity.

Internal dissent became apparent as Infantino’s adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned, condemning the proposal, and FIFA’s COO Kevin Lamour voiced deception by Infantino. Amid this, Joshua Kushner’s Thrive venture firm remained involved, yet FIFA’s leadership opted to terminate the plan.

Infantino’s future with FIFA faces uncertainty, his leadership under scrutiny from UEFA and Concacaf members. Infantino, originally slated to run unopposed in 2027, now faces potential challengers, as trust in his leadership wanes within federations hesitating to support his tenure.

Lise Klaveness, Norwegian Football Federation president, remarked, “We didn’t vote for him last time, and we’ve been sceptical about this. There are many good things about FIFA, but if you take a lax approach to governance principles and rules, you quickly lose trust.”

This reversal marks a significant moment for Infantino, turning from a successful FIFA president to one facing internal challenges. As nominations for the 2027 election approach in November, a contest for FIFA’s leadership looms.
