Harrison Butker’s Strategy to Improve Field Goal Accuracy

In 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs extended Harrison Butker’s contract, securing him for four more years with a $25.6 million deal. Butker has been instrumental in the Chiefs’ success, notably achieving a career-high 94.3 percent field goal accuracy in 2023. During the postseason, he successfully made all 11 field goals and eight extra point attempts, contributing to the Chiefs’ third Super Bowl victory.

However, new kickoff rules introduced in the 2024 regular season prompted Butker to experiment with his kicking style. These adjustments negatively impacted his field goal percentages in 2024 and 2025, which dropped to 84 percent and 84.2 percent, respectively. These figures represented two of his worst seasons aside from 2023 when he was contending with an ankle injury.

Butker acknowledged to reporters on Thursday that his field goal performance was hindered by his kickoff experiments. He revealed his plan to unify his approach to both kickoffs and field goals by focusing on consistent ball contact.

“Field goals matter the most,” Butker stated. “Trying to hit those knuckleballs and funny kickoffs maybe affected my field goals a little bit. Halfway through last season, I decided to forget the kickoffs, but I’m just gonna hit a high hang time ball with good location, focusing on consistency. Matching my field goal contact on kickoffs has helped improve my field goals. This is the approach I intend to maintain for training camp and the upcoming season.”

He holds the record for the longest successful field goal in Super Bowl history, with a 57-yard achievement during Super Bowl LVIII. With renewed focus and confidence heading into the regular season, Butker aims to restore his field goal proficiency. Throughout his nine-year career, he has maintained an impressive 88.3 percent field goal accuracy.
