Police are actively searching for a gunman responsible for shooting a Walmart employee in a Pennsylvania store. The incident occurred during an altercation between two men on Friday evening, according to authorities.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire at the Walmart located at 50 McDade Blvd. in Darby Township, Delaware County, shortly after 7 p.m. Darby Township Police Chief Michael Sousa provided details of the incident to Fox News Digital.
Investigators believe the conflict began with a verbal argument between two individuals in the self-checkout area. One man allegedly drew a handgun and fired, hitting an unintended target—a female Walmart employee.
“It looked like, from what we’re gathering with my detectives, two males get into a verbal altercation at self-checkout,” Sousa stated. “One of the males brandishes a firearm, fires a round indiscriminately and hits one of the female Walmart employees in the leg—not the subject he was arguing with.”
The injured employee received medical attention at a hospital. Chief Sousa did not immediately provide an update on her condition.
The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival and remains at large. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage to identify the shooter.
Chief Sousa confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. Officers have cleared the Walmart and nearby businesses as part of their safety measures.
