Wide receiver Malachi Toney has made a noticeable impact as the season begins, drawing admiration from legendary figure Michael Irvin of Miami Hurricanes fame.
On Friday, Toney was instrumental in the Miami Hurricanes’ decisive 45-6 victory over Stanford Cardinal. He recorded 12 receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns, emerging as quarterback Darian Mensah’s primary target. Mensah accumulated the majority of his 401 passing yards through Toney.
Following Toney’s outstanding performance, former Miami Hurricanes receiver Michael Irvin shared his approval on his “The Locker Room Podcast.” Irvin lauded Toney’s timing and patience, declaring him the greatest receiver he has ever seen.
“Everything he does, his timing is so perfect, and his patience is so over the top,” Irvin said. “This is the greatest receiver I’ve ever laid my eyes on.”
Irvin noted that he waited to see other players before making such a statement, but believes nobody matches Toney’s skills.
The commendation from Irvin carries weight. As a former National Champion with the Hurricanes in 1987, Irvin’s achievements include five Pro Bowl selections, leading the NFL in receiving yards in 1991, and securing three Super Bowl victories with the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s.
Toney’s recognition comes early in the season. Simultaneously, Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith has started strong, achieving eight receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns in their 56-3 triumph over Ball State. Smith’s upcoming challenges include a game against No. 6 Texas, providing a test of his skills.
Toney, however, will also face significant tests, including an anticipated matchup against Notre Dame on Nov. 7, along with other ACC games. The progress of Toney and Smith will offer insights as the college football season progresses.
