Controversy Surrounds Sophie Cunningham’s Stance on Transgender Participation

A crowd of both critics and supporters gathered at the Target Center on Sunday as the Indiana Fever faced the Minnesota Lynx. This happened after Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham expressed her views on transgender participation in women’s sports.

Cheryl Reeve, the coach of the Lynx, displayed her support for transgender youth. She wore a light blue shirt declaring, “Trans kids belong,” while leading her team to a 108-100 victory over the Fever. Many fans echoed her sentiment, wearing shirts with the same message in the stands.

This marked the third consecutive Fever game to attract protests after Cunningham’s comments in an ESPN article. Before the game, Cunningham and Reeve spoke midcourt. Reeve chose not to disclose the details of their conversation. “We both recognize our platforms and discussed the importance of education,” Reeve shared. “We have commonalities and differences, just like any issues. It’s about handling matters respectfully. Meeting in person was beneficial.”

Cunningham faced boos during her first game participation and consistently throughout the match. This reaction was evident as Indiana Fever played against the Lynx, captured during the game’s first half by photographer Abbie Parr.

Outside the venue, protestors showed their support for transgender rights. A loudspeaker voice repeatedly stated, “Protect trans women,” while others held signs saying, “Love is truth” and “Thank you Sophie.”

In addressing the team’s approach to the ongoing controversy, Caitlin Clark, a team member, stated post-game, “We remain focused on basketball. Finding ways to improve is key, especially after tonight’s loss.” Asked for additional thoughts, Clark responded, “I stand by my answer.”

Cunningham remarked last Friday in Portland that she wasn’t troubled by the protests. “Those who know me understand that I am filled with love and positivity,” she explained. “My passion is basketball and inspiring future athletes in a positive way, which remains my focus despite distractions.”
