Capsized Pontoon Boat Near Alcatraz: One Dead, Three Missing

A tragic accident occurred near San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island when a pontoon boat capsized and sank on Tuesday. One person has died, and three others remain missing, according to authorities.

Rescuers managed to bring sixteen individuals to safety from the water. Most of the passengers on the boat were family members participating in a memorial service. Fire Chief Dean Crispen reported that upon arrival, the rescue crews found a three-deck pontoon vessel nearly submerged, with its motor still running and leaking fuel.

The deceased individual was alive when rescued from the cold waters by emergency teams but died later. Sadly, a dog on board also perished in the incident. Three individuals who sustained injuries during the fall from the vessel are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

Efforts to locate the missing individuals are ongoing in the open water west of the Golden Gate Bridge. The search operation, involving divers, helicopters, and boats, was expected to persist throughout the night, as noted by officials.

The number of missing individuals was initially reported as two, but authorities revised the figure to three following witness accounts. Chief Dean Crispen emphasized, “Right now we are in full rescue mode.”

The U.S. Coast Guard shared on X Tuesday evening that search and rescue operations are ongoing. They assured that updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
