Clay Holmes Ready for Action; Cubs Rotation Adjustments

Clay Holmes Set to Return

Clay Holmes is prepared to rejoin the MLB stage. One of the Chicago Cubs’ trade deadline acquisitions, Holmes, is coming off the 60-day injured list this weekend against Kansas City. Holmes had expressed a preference not to continue rehab starts, and Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that the plan is for Holmes to play with the Cubs rather than a fourth rehab start.

Holmes has been away since mid-May due to a right fibula fracture. He managed to throw 73 pitches during his third rehab game last Sunday. Alongside him, Kevin Gausman, another right-hander, is set to play against the Royals rather than against the Blue Jays on Thursday as initially planned. This schedule places Gausman for Friday and Holmes for Saturday in the upcoming series.

Holmes is enthusiastic about joining the Cubs, stating, “Looking at this team, especially the defense, it’s a great fit for someone like me. I’m a sinker ball pitcher, relying on good contact quality and trusting the defense is liberating.” Holmes had spoken to the media before a game at Wrigley Field, further indicating his readiness and optimism.

Cubs Rotation Decisions

As Holmes re-enters the team, the Cubs face tough decisions regarding their rotation. Counsell didn’t anticipate the regular use of a six-man rotation but acknowledged that the strategy could be viable occasionally. Holmes, with significant experience as a high-leverage reliever, could offer the team more flexibility. With 74 saves and a 2.85 ERA for the Yankees from 2022 to 2024, Holmes is open to varied roles, prioritizing team success over individual positions.

“The playoffs are about winning each game, not about individual roles. I’m ready to contribute in any area, whether starting or relieving, as needed,” Holmes stated.

Tyrone Taylor’s Role Against Left-Handers

Manager Craig Counsell plans to utilize Tyrone Taylor in left field against left-handers. Ian Happ, a switch-hitter, has struggled this season against left-handers, hitting .158 with a .232 on-base percentage. Hence, Counsell decided to bench Happ against particularly tough lefties, like Dodgers’ Tarik Skubal.

Taylor, who debuted in left field against the Los Angeles Dodgers, brings a .301/.311/.589 slash line against lefties this season. “I’m excited about the team’s energy and am committed to learning and fitting in,” Taylor expressed before the game. Counsell has discussed reduced at-bats for Happ during a stretch of consecutive games and is clear that Taylor will receive opportunities against left-handers.

Kevin Alcántara Returns to Triple A

Kevin Alcántara, who hit his first big-league home run against the Dodgers, returned to Triple-A Iowa shortly thereafter. Despite a short stint with the team, Alcántara impressed during his time in left field. His recall was meant to be brief following Taylor’s addition.

Counsell explained the decision, saying, “We aim to field the best team possible. Kevin performed well in his short opportunity, and he understands the situation. He’s done what he could and will await further chances.” Alcántara must continue to demonstrate strong performances when given opportunities in the future.
