Fifield, who dated Platner from 2013-2015, initially spoke to the Times off-record about Platner’s behavior. These details emerged only after Jenny Racicot’s public statements of abuse inspired her to come forward. According to Fifield, Platner had engaged in ‘stealthing,’ a non-consensual act illegal in certain states.

The Times’ article revealed personal accounts of Platner’s behavior but was criticized for not adequately corroborating Fifield’s experiences. Critics claim that the Times sidestepped crucial aspects of the allegations.

Emily Zanotti, a friend of Fifield, offered to confirm the abuse but was not contacted by the Times. This lack of communication added fuel to the criticisms of the Times’ handling of the report.

The Times stands by its reporting. A spokesperson remarked, “Our piece on Graham Platner’s behavior was powerful journalism, revealing new details about the candidate’s actions.” They assert the report was fair and factually accurate.
