Retired Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara found himself handling a crisis at 35,000 feet when an otherwise routine United Airlines flight turned tumultuous. The incident took place on United Flight 1364, traveling from Newark to Fort Lauderdale.
According to O’Hara, he witnessed flight attendants spend nearly 45 minutes attempting to calm a passenger exhibiting increasingly aggressive behavior. The passenger’s agitation reportedly began after crew members refused to serve him more alcohol. This detail came to light after O’Hara spoke with the Broward Sheriff’s Office following the man’s arrest. The passenger continued to shout and make threats, escalating the situation into a physical confrontation.
It was infuriating to hear a man speak to these women who were just incredibly professional and trying to keep everybody safe that way for so long,O’Hara said.
Eventually, O’Hara and two off-duty Bergen County, New Jersey, sheriff’s deputies intervened. Together, they managed to restrain the passenger using plastic flex cuffs. The man was then secured back in his seat, allowing the flight attendants to be seated safely and the plane to land without further incident.
United Airlines acknowledged the incident in a statement, expressing gratitude to the crew and passengers who helped ensure everyone’s safety. The airline specified that the Boeing 737-900 carried 174 passengers and six crew members.
After the incident, O’Hara reflected on the potential dangers of violent outbursts on an airplane, emphasizing the unpredictability and confined nature of the situation. His wife, a lieutenant with the Newark Police Department, supported him during the ordeal.
Following the successful resolution, O’Hara’s wife took to social media, commending his actions. Proud of my husband today, she wrote, recognizing his leadership and the quick intervention that ensured safety on the flight.
O’Hara hopes the incident inspires Americans to take action when faced with clear and present danger, highlighting the importance of active intervention. He also called for airlines to routinely equip flight crews with restraints and train them in their use to handle such situations safely.
Authorities have yet to publicly identify the passenger or announce any criminal charges. Further details from local law enforcement and the Federal Aviation Administration are awaited.
