Incident on Carnival Cruise Highlights Hygiene Issues

An unidentified passenger on a Carnival Cruise has recently attracted significant attention after being recorded using a restaurant fork to scratch the bottom of her foot. This unusual act was documented in a series of videos posted on Instagram by the user lucky_charmedcourt, showing the woman, who appears to have a skin condition, engaged in foot scratching with a fork.

The videos sparked concern on the ship, identified as the Carnival Sunrise, as well as online. The Instagram user also attempted to report the incident to guest services and the ship’s captain. In one video labeled ‘foot fungus lady uses fork on cruise,’ the passenger is seen using the fork’s tines more vigorously.

The cruise blog CruiseHive identified the ship, which was formerly known as the Carnival Triumph. Both Carnival Cruise Line and the Instagram poster were contacted for comment. In response, Carnival Cruise Line issued a statement on July 22 to address the situation.

‘We can confirm that forks are intended for food, not foot care. Our team addressed the issue promptly with the guest and removed the utensil from service.’

Carnival emphasized the importance of hygiene, noting that their crew works diligently to ensure a safe and clean environment for all passengers. Despite the online reaction, with over 150,000 comments on Instagram, hygiene on cruise ships has been a topic of ongoing debate.

Reddit users joined the discussion, expressing amazement and concern about the incident’s location in the dining area. Comments on Instagram reflected similar sentiments, with one person stating they avoid cruises for such reasons, while another joked about preferring plastic utensils.

Although this incident has raised scrutiny about sanitization on cruise ships, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) estimates over 38 million people will cruise this year, an increase from last year’s 37.2 million, according to the Associated Press.
