During a rally outside the Target Center in Minneapolis, women’s sports advocates experienced harassment from transgender activists. Jennifer Sey, founder of XX-XY Athletics, and Kendall Kotzmacher, an ambassador, reported that counter-protesters screamed at them, tore their signs, and followed them to their vehicles. The advocates gathered to support WNBA star Sophie Cunningham, who has been vocal about the need for sex-protected spaces within female sports.
The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) released a statement emphasizing the importance of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The association represents over 200 individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. They underlined their commitment to protecting women’s sports while fostering transformational change.
“Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group, including transgender individuals, only promotes fear and division,” the WNBPA stated. “We will continue difficult discussions but refuse to be manipulated for political purposes.”
Sophie Cunningham, known for her stance on protecting young girls in sports, sparked controversy with her remarks during a game against the Indiana Fever. She stated that young girls should not compete against biological males in sports, driving further debate within the league.
Following her statements, former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom announced his intention to enter the WNBA draft, claiming to meet eligibility by identifying as a woman. This has intensified the discourse around transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Supporters of Cunningham have organized rallies at several of her games. In contrast, others in the sports community, such as Megan Rapinoe, have criticized Cunningham’s stance, citing her associations with figures opposed to transgender inclusivity, like Riley Gaines.
The WNBPA encourages fans to support the players and report harassment incidents both at games and online. They urge individuals to advocate for stronger protections under Title IX.
