Steve Smith’s Perspective on Brandon Aiyuk’s Situation

Carolina Panthers legend Steve Smith shares his views on the issues surrounding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Smith, like many NFL fans, finds Aiyuk’s situation perplexing and says he has “no damn idea” what’s going on.

Aiyuk’s challenges with the 49ers started in 2024 when the team voided his 2026 guaranteed salary. They cited unmet obligations related to his ACL injury rehab from October 2024. Adding to this, his peculiar social media activity has further distanced him from the team.

“It’s a lot of things, but man, I have no damn idea what’s going on in that young man’s head,” Smith commented on “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich” airing on OutKick.

Highlighting the unique nature of Aiyuk’s situation, Smith admitted hesitating to join critics openly on social media. Instead, he stresses the need for someone to intervene and support the 28-year-old.

Concerns Over Behavior

Smith noted there seems to be an issue within Aiyuk, affecting his career trajectory. Without being judgmental, he suggests Aiyuk needs honest guidance on his career goals and actions.

“There’s clearly something going on, and it’s not just mental; it might be emotional. Someone needs to sit down with him to understand his real goals, as he’s self-sabotaging,” added Smith.

Aiyuk’s off-field issues include a California misdemeanor charge for speeding near the 49ers facility. Social media escapades, like hints about joining the Washington Commanders and conflicts with former teammate Jayden Daniels, add to his controversies.

After a social media jab at head coach Kyle Shanahan following a car accident, Smith pondered Aiyuk’s NFL future: “I hope he does something to help himself before it’s too late.”

The Path Forward

Steve Smith reflects on other players overcoming worse situations and staying employed. He hopes Aiyuk will find solutions before unemployment looms, with his career fading, and life beyond football approaching.

Aiyuk showed promise in 2023 with 75 receptions, 1,342 yards, and seven touchdowns. Following a lengthy negotiation, the 49ers extended his contract for four years at $120 million. However, after a 2024 ACL injury limiting him to seven games, Aiyuk remains off the field amid negative headlines.
