Boston Red Sox’s Willson Contreras Faces Home Crowd’s Boos

On Saturday, Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras received unexpected boos from the crowd at Fenway Park. Returning to the lineup after missing two games due to illness, Contreras faced criticism from fans for not hustling on a ground ball to third base. The jeers followed him from the batter’s box to the dugout.

Contreras, who was removed in his last appearance because of the illness, reportedly was still feeling unwell over the weekend. Speaking on NESN, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy defended Contreras. “I know how that looks but I’m also aware more than others that he’s a little beat up and told us before the game, ‘I don’t have everything today.’ So I’m fine,” Tracy said. “Especially with a guy that plays the game as hard as he does and how hard he turns around first base all the time, I’m fine with it.”

Contreras had a challenging game, striking out twice and managing one single. He declined to talk to the media afterward. Despite the incident, the Red Sox are likely to move past this without further comment. The event highlighted growing expectations for the team as they continue their impressive 27-5 streak since July 1.
