In every aspect of my life, sports have played a significant role. My parents’ first encounter was at a Florida Relays track meet at the University of Florida. Growing up, my mother worked as a Division II track coach at the Colorado School of Mines. I spent many afternoons at her practices, observing her coaching techniques and athlete interactions.
Although I tried various sports during my childhood, my passion was always for throwing. Exposure to collegiate track events at a young age highlighted the numerous opportunities athletics could offer. Determined to excel, I aimed to perform at the Division I level. Pursuing this goal, I achieved multiple high school state and national championships and developed a network of friends nationwide. My involvement in track and field has indisputably shaped who I am today.
The transformation continued at Clemson University as a student-athlete. Clemson provided chances I couldn’t have anticipated. With access to top-notch facilities and a supportive community of coaches, staff, teammates, and peers, each day presents a chance for personal growth. How much stronger can I become? How much further can I push myself? What more can I absorb?
A crucial element is ensuring every American athlete can pursue their aspirations, mirroring my own experiences. Sports refine skills such as resilience, adaptability, time management, and relationship building. My advisors motivated me to tackle both a B.S. and an M.P.A., despite the easier paths available. They encouraged leadership through involvement in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board, Atlantic Coast Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (ACC SAAC), and various internships, organizations, and volunteer roles. Without Clemson Athletics’ support, my achievements wouldn’t have been possible.
Current Challenges Facing College Sports
Congress needs to safeguard the future of American athletes. Recent judicial decisions, like NCAA v. Alston and House v. NCAA, have complicated the NCAA landscape. Varied state laws and court rulings create instability within college sports.
Institutions like Clemson strive to equip athletes with resources needed for success. Nonetheless, gaps between well-funded programs and mid-major ones widen, and prospects for high school athletes diminish. Factors such as reduced post-House roster slots and the reliance on transfer portals impact recruitment, while eligibility waivers add complexity.
Budget restrictions have forced schools to consider cutting athletes and dropping sports. Olympic disciplines, such as men’s swimming or track and field, face elimination while championship support dwindles. On the other hand, revenue-sharing growth and Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) developments offer new opportunities but pose risks such as unregulated fees and exploitation.
The transfer portal alters college athletics, challenging team loyalty and culture. Frequent transfers hinder cohesive team structures, eroding the tradition of college sports.
The Importance of Congressional Action
Immediate congressional intervention is imperative to preserve college sports. Protecting current NCAA athletes and future aspirants like my siblings is crucial. S. 4668, the Protect College Sports Act, aims to create equitable conditions for all athletes by regulating revenue sharing, NIL, transfer portals, and eligibility requirements.
If Congress fails to act, opportunities that have significantly impacted lives may vanish. By establishing guidelines, lawmakers can preserve Olympic sports and maintain chances for countless student-athletes nationwide.
Ella Brooks, a Clemson University junior and women’s track and field team member, advocates for political engagement beyond her athletic career. As a contributor to the Atlantic Coast Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Brooks supports federal legislation aimed at fostering fairness in college athletics. Her aspirations include advancing into politics post-athletics.
