A shooting incident near Notre Dame’s South Bend, Indiana campus resulted in injuries to a woman and a police officer on Saturday night. The violence occurred after a tailgate party around 7:30 p.m. ET, as people were moving from the university’s tailgate areas to Eddy Street Commons.

South Bend authorities reported that Notre Dame Police identified a man who was allegedly armed and threatening people with a gun. However, when South Bend Police located a suspect fitting the description, the person was unarmed.

South Bend Police stated on Facebook that about 20 officers were in the area when a single gunshot was heard near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard. Officers found a woman with a non-life-threatening leg injury and a police officer hurt by possible shrapnel or a ricochet. Both were taken to a local hospital and are expected to recover fully. The officer is reportedly in good condition, and the woman is also stable.

The suspect, described as a heavyset Black male with dreadlocks wearing blue shorts and a black shirt with a red and blue design, fled the scene. He was last seen heading west, and police are still searching for him.

In response to the incident, police evacuated nearby businesses and parking garages and secured the area with a heavy police presence. The South Bend Police Department advised the public to avoid Eddy Street Commons due to the ongoing investigation.

Fox News reached out for additional details, but further comments were not available beyond the information shared on Facebook.

Later that night, another shooting occurred about a mile from the initial incident, resulting in at least two fatalities and one person critically injured. Police have not linked these two incidents.
