The storyline gained further traction due to Cunningham’s previous comments opposing transgender athletes in women’s sports, adding layers to the public’s reaction. The article’s original title was perceived by many as pointed, leading to a swift title revision by Sports Illustrated. The updated title read: “Sophie Cunningham’s Enforcer Role Gets Reversed Onto Her With Hard Foul in Fever-Sky.”

The revised story referenced Cunningham’s previous foul on Sheldon, drawing parallels between the two events. Cunningham herself admitted to deserving the ejection from the previous season, stating, “Last year I did the same thing, and I got kicked out, as I deserved to be kicked out. There’s no reason to even play that card.”

After the ejection, Carrington’s social media post, tagging the Fever and writing “WHITE PRIVILEGE,” added controversy. Cunningham addressed the post, saying, “We saw it. I think the league is taking care of that. I mean, this has nothing to do with race.”

Indiana head coach Stephanie White commented during a post-game conference, defending Carrington’s competitive nature while supporting the officials’ call. “Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul.
