The recent clash between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky drew attention after a hard foul left Sophie Cunningham with a bloody mouth. The incident involved Chicago’s DiJonai Carrington, who fouled Cunningham during a layup attempt. The foul, occurring with two minutes left in the first quarter, was upgraded to a Flagrant 2, leading to Carrington’s ejection.
Sports Illustrated initially described the incident as karma for Cunningham, referring back to a previous hard foul she committed in the 2025 WNBA season against Jacy Sheldon. That incident also resulted in a Flagrant 2 and ejection for Cunningham. Sports Illustrated published an article titled “Sophie Cunningham Got a Bitter Taste of Karma After Drawing Flagrant Foul in Fever-Sky,” sparking immediate reactions on social media.
The storyline gained further traction due to Cunningham’s previous comments opposing transgender athletes in women’s sports, adding layers to the public’s reaction. The article’s original title was perceived by many as pointed, leading to a swift title revision by Sports Illustrated. The updated title read: “Sophie Cunningham’s Enforcer Role Gets Reversed Onto Her With Hard Foul in Fever-Sky.”
Following the game, OutKick reached out to Sports Illustrated for comments regarding the title change. The revised story referenced Cunningham’s previous foul on Sheldon, drawing parallels between the two events. Cunningham herself admitted to deserving the ejection from the previous season, stating, “Last year I did the same thing, and I got kicked out, as I deserved to be kicked out. There’s no reason to even play that card.”
After the ejection, Carrington’s social media post, tagging the Fever and writing “WHITE PRIVILEGE,” added controversy. Cunningham addressed the post, saying, “We saw it. I think the league is taking care of that. I mean, this has nothing to do with race.”
Indiana head coach Stephanie White commented during a post-game conference, defending Carrington’s competitive nature while supporting the officials’ call. “Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul. I don’t think that DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did. But it did happen and I thought it was the right call,” White stated. However, she refrained from discussing Carrington’s provocative post.
