Jacy Maranhao, a Brazilian soccer player, recently shared a health update following a dramatic incident during a match at Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira. Maranhao, a player for Coritiba, celebrated a goal by jumping over the barrier on the pitch, aiming to find his wife in the crowd. However, he unexpectedly landed in an open trap door, injuring his ankle.
In his own words, Maranhao admitted, ‘I got carried away after scoring the goal.’ He explained that he intended to celebrate not only with his pregnant wife but also with the fans, forgetting about the moat on the other side of the barrier.
The incident became more unfortunate as video assistant referee (VAR) review negated Maranhao’s goal, ruling him offsides. Despite the setback, Coritiba secured a 2-1 victory. Maranhao was able to play the rest of the half despite his injury, although he later substituted out before the game’s conclusion.
The 29-year-old defender reflected on the incident, describing it as a dreamlike moment when ‘you’re falling from a building.’ He provided reassurance by stating, ‘I twisted my foot there. It’s a bit sore, but I’m fine.’
Following the incident, Maranhao offered an update on social media concerning his recovery. As reported by Jamaican Observer, he wrote, ‘At first it was more of a scare than anything else.’ During the match, he experienced significant pain and was unable to put weight on his foot, but later reported feeling much better and recovering well.
Maranhao, who previously played for Operário in 2024 and 2025, is in his second season with Coritiba. This season marks Coritiba’s return to Série A after their time in Série B last year. Maranhao has participated in 19 matches, scoring a goal this season.
