Strong Defensive Play Leads White Sox to Victory Over Reds

In an impressive defensive play, Luis Castillo leapt off the mound to field TJ Friedl’s bunt and made a glove-hand toss to first base, ending the fifth inning. Castillo highlighted the moment: “At that place I tried to be one more of the guys, one more defensive player to help the team. I was impressed too with my speed. I’m 33 years old and surprised I made that play.” Upon returning to the dugout, the manager and pitching coach acknowledged his feat with amused reactions.

Castillo’s play marked one of several standout defensive efforts by the Chicago White Sox in their 5-0 victory against the Cincinnati Reds. This victory took place in front of 24,099 fans at Rate Field. Castillo shone in his second start since joining the Sox on August 1. He allowed only one hit, struck out 10, and walked two over seven scoreless innings. “That’s the result when you have confidence in your pitches and plan,” Castillo stated. “We executed well.” The only hit he allowed was a one-out single by Sal Stewart in the first inning.

Eric Venable, discussing Castillo’s performance, said, “That was awesome. In control the whole time, just one hit over seven innings, outstanding work.” The catcher, Drew Romo, also played a crucial role, seamlessly coordinating with Castillo on the field. Romo and shortstop Chase Meidroth contributed offensively, each hitting home runs. Romo hit a solo shot in the third inning, sharing, “I’ve been trying a lot in the cage. Everything was good there, and it worked on the field today.” Meidroth, after recovering from a wrist issue, delivered a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Venable commented, “The wrist is in good shape, and Chase is making timely swing decisions.”

Supported by strong defense, Castillo excelled. Left fielder Tristan Peters made a leaping catch at the wall, preventing an extra-base hit by Matt McLain. Second baseman Sam Antonacci made a diving stop, throwing out Héctor Rodríguez in the fifth inning. Castillo praised the defensive effort, “Romo was phenomenal. And credit to the defense; they played really well.” He also contributed with a neat fielding play to end the fifth inning.

Castillo celebrated after striking out Michael Toglia to finish his 104-pitch outing in the seventh inning. He noted, “After the sixth, the manager asked if I was good for one more inning, and I definitely wanted it. The seventh inning was perfect.”

Rookie Hagen Smith struck out three batters after walking the leadoff hitter in the eighth. Huascar Brazobán allowed a hit in the ninth but retired the next two batters, sealing the win. The White Sox, currently in first place in the American League Central with a 62-57 record, maintain a 3½ game lead over the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers. Venable praised his team’s pitchers, “Really good stuff again from Hagen. Brazobán did his job well.”
