Russell Westbrook Retires from NBA

Russell Westbrook officially retired from the NBA, ending an 18-season career. The announcement came through a farewell video narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan on X, featuring the caption, “Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve already watched the end. You had to be there. And now it’s over.”

Westbrook, known for his aggressive and relentless playing style, was a standout in today’s NBA, which often emphasizes load management. He consistently attacked the rim and played with unmatched intensity.

“You can hate the jumper, the turnovers and the chaos. Good luck arguing with the résumé.”

Westbrook leaves as the Triple-Double King, exceeding Oscar Robertson’s once-thought impossible record with 209 triple-doubles. His career accolades include nine All-Star appearances, nine All-NBA selections, two scoring titles, the 2017 MVP award, and inclusion in the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.

The 2016-17 season epitomized Westbrook’s impact. Following Kevin Durant’s departure to Golden State, Westbrook led an abandoned Oklahoma City team by averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists, becoming the first player since Robertson in 1962 to average a triple-double for a season. He won the MVP and averaged a triple-double for three additional seasons.

Westbrook’s playing style wasn’t always elegant. Fans saw wild shots and careless turnovers, but never a lack of effort. His career spanned teams from Oklahoma City to Houston, Washington, Denver, and Sacramento. Despite his age, Westbrook started in 58 of 64 games for the Kings, averaging 15.2 points and 6.7 assists.

Both Sacramento and Washington were interested in Westbrook continuing, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, but he decided against it, retiring on his own terms.

His years with the Lakers were heavily scrutinized. The LeBron-Anthony Davis-Westbrook combination brought intense media debate, and unfortunately, did not meet expectations.

Westbrook retires holding the 14th place in all-time scoring (27,176 points) and fifth in assists (10,351), along with 9,025 rebounds and 2,038 steals. Whether you appreciated his style or criticized his field-goal percentage, his presence was undeniable when he had the ball.

The NBA has numerous stars, but Russell Westbrook was one of its most unique talents.
