Air Traffic Controller Prevents Potential Mix-Up with Duplicate Flight Numbers

An air traffic controller’s quick thinking averted a possible mix-up when two American Airlines flights shared the same call sign at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. One flight was arriving from Chicago, while another using the same call sign was about to depart. The controller immediately identified the potential confusion and referred to the planes as American 2482 ‘departure’ and American 2482 ‘arrival,’ successfully coordinating their movements.

The two aircraft operated without incident, landing and taking off as intended. ‘I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years — I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much emerge with the same call sign,’ the controller noted. The situation could have been dangerous if not managed promptly.

The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the incident. An American Airlines representative explained that the arriving flight had faced delays. Another flight at the airport was assigned the same call sign to transport passengers back to Chicago.
