The Farewell to Legendary Singer Bonnie Tyler

Hundreds of fans gathered in the streets of a Welsh coastal town on Saturday to bid farewell to the late singer Bonnie Tyler as her coffin was brought back home. The Welsh pop star, Grammy-nominated and beloved worldwide for her ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away last month in a hospital in Portugal at the age of 75.

Tyler was hospitalized in May in Faro, where she had a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. Neighbors and fans from across the UK and beyond took to the streets of Mumbles, near Swansea, to witness the hearse carrying her coffin, draped with a Welsh flag. Dozens waited outside her former home or left floral tributes there.

“She always came home, she always returned to her fans in Wales,” said Carys Edwards, 18. “Her songs touched many people here in Wales; we loved her deeply.” Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, was the daughter of a coal miner and grew up in public housing with an outdoor bathroom in Skewen, Wales, around seven miles from Swansea. She had three sisters and two brothers.

The singer earned three Grammy nominations and represented Great Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, where she placed 19th. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II honored her as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music, mainly for “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” The ballad topped charts in Britain and the United States and has surpassed one billion streams, boosted by real eclipses in 2017, 2024, and more recently during this week’s solar eclipse.

Tyler was also known for other hits like “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero” from the “Footloose” soundtrack. A ceremony celebrating Tyler’s life will be held on Monday for family and friends at a church in Swansea, before the singer takes a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
