Florida Man Charged with Murder After Remains Found in Suitcases

A Florida man, Jose Proano, has been charged with first-degree murder for allegedly stalking, killing, and dismembering his 71-year-old stepfather, Jorge Vazquez-Escutia. The discovery of Vazquez-Escutia’s remains in three suitcases led authorities to suspect Proano.

Suspicion and Arrest

On August 4, suitcases containing human remains were found along a roadway in Orlando, near the home shared by Proano’s mother and stepfather. Approximately 23 hours before, Vazquez-Escutia’s family reported concerns after discovering his phone, wallet, and keys at home, with what appeared to be blood on a fence. Security footage from a neighbor provided further evidence. It captured a man in a black shirt jumping over a wall into Vazquez-Escutia’s property on the morning of August 2. Later, the same man appeared carrying suitcases, placing what appeared to be human remains into them.

By 4:28 p.m., the man in the video was seen walking down the driveway with heavy suitcases that visibly strained his arms. Investigators connected Proano to the scene through phone records showing his presence in the area then.

Proano’s Background and Arrest

Proano, 44, traveled from Northport, Florida, approximately 150 miles away. His ex-wife told authorities of his erratic behavior and threatening remarks towards her. Proano met with detectives and revealed his negative relationship with Vazquez-Escutia, feeling his stepfather limited his access to his mother due to his schizophrenia.

Proano frequently called 911 for welfare checks on his mother, convinced of impending harm, although deputies assured him nothing was wrong at her home.

The Grisly Discovery

Several hours after Vazquez-Escutia was reported missing, deputies searched near his home. Around midnight on August 4, they found a suitcase with a foul odor behind a brick wall. Inside was Vazquez-Escutia’s head. Additional bags found 400 feet down the road contained more body parts, with luggage tags linking back to Proano’s mother.

Proano denied being the man in the footage but later admitted his phone was at the crime scene. Authorities noted “defensive style injuries” on Proano’s body, including scratches on his hands, arms, and cheek.

Legal Consequences

Proano’s previous charges stemmed from a 2022 armed burglary. A plea bargain had him on probation until 2027, but his current arrest violates its terms, reinstating the case. Proano remains in custody without bond. His public defender has not commented further.
