Escalation in Drone Warfare: Ukraine and Russia Trade Blows

Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia on Sunday, killing at least six people. This attack marks one of Kyiv’s largest aerial offensives in the ongoing war. Through this action, Ukraine has intensified its strategy this year, targeting Russia’s military industries and energy facilities with long-range missiles and drone swarms. Among the targets are Wildberries depots, costing the Russian retail giant billions in merchandise. Such attacks have heightened public awareness of the war within Russia, almost four and a half years into Moscow’s extensive invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine itself has faced Russian attacks, including drone strikes that destroyed homes and ignited the famous book market in Kyiv. Russian drone strikes have recently killed civilians, such as a woman and her child, as Ukrainian civilian casualties rise.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported the destruction of 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that of the 600 drones aimed at the capital, a third were destroyed over the Moscow region. An elderly man, aged 83, died when a drone hit his home in the region. A separate attack in Podolsk set a Wildberries warehouse on fire. In the southwestern Rostov region, drone strikes resulted in five deaths, damaging homes, a railway station, and igniting a forest fire, as reported by local Governor Yury Slyusar.

A Russian missile attack on Kryvyi Rih in Ukraine killed two people and wounded 14 more, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Another casualty occurred in Sumy. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, the nation’s largest steelmaker, confirmed missile impacts, leading to partial operation suspensions. In the Zaporizhzhia region, a couple died from a Russian strike, according to Ivan Fedorov, the local military head.

“Wherever the Russians can reach with their ballistic missiles, they strike civilian infrastructure,” President Zelenskyy commented on the recent barrage on Ukrainian lands.

Fires broke out in Kyiv due to Russian attacks, injuring six and destroying part of the city’s large book market near the Pochaina metro station. Firefighters managed the flames while smoke darkened the sky.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced the targeting of a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and military-industrial sites in Kyiv. These included facilities producing Flamingo missiles, integral to Ukraine’s long-range capabilities. Recently, Kyiv used these missiles to strike a facility in Samara, Russia.

NATO and Romanian Airspace

On Sunday, Romania’s Ministry of National Defense confirmed that a Spanish F-18 jet intercepted and destroyed a drone that entered Romanian airspace, a NATO member state. The incursion occurred near Galati, close to the Moldova border. The drone was brought down after radar contact and authorization for engagement. Drone debris was later found in the Black Sea near Constanta, though the drone’s origin remained unspecified.

Past weeks saw Romanian pilots destroy three drones as Russian activities near the Ukrainian border amplified. Since the beginning of the invasion, Romania has encountered numerous drone incidents, some resulting in crashes on its soil. Acting Foreign Minister Oana Toiu mentioned that Spain’s increased deployment in Romania was prompted by prior incidents at NATO’s request to strengthen the region’s defenses.
