Dinosaur Movies Compete at North American Box Office

This weekend saw two different dinosaur-themed movies grabbing a portion of the North American box office, though neither matched “Spider-Man” or claimed second place from “The Odyssey.” “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” aimed at young children, and “The End of Oak Street,” a PG-13 action film, vied for third. Studio estimates placed “The End of Oak Street” slightly ahead with $21 million, compared to $20.5 million for “Paw Patrol.”

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained dominant, three weekends into its release. The film garnered another $70 million in the U.S. and Canada, tallying to $785.8 million domestically. Its global earnings exceeded $2 billion, becoming the eighth film to hit this mark without adjusting for inflation, and the second-fastest after “Avengers: Endgame.”

“The Odyssey” held the second spot with $23.2 million, reaching a total of $504.7 million domestically and over $1.2 billion globally, driven in part by $36.6 million from China.

“The End of Oak Street” performed well with a $21 million opening in North America and $26 million internationally, against an $80 million budget. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film stars Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway as 1982 suburban parents whose neighborhood is transported to prehistoric times. Though critics rated it 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were less enthusiastic with a B CinemaScore and mixed recommendations.

Family audiences supported “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” released in 3,545 theaters. The film received an A CinemaScore and has grossed $69 million worldwide. Katseye’s “Katseye: Wild Hearts” placed fifth with $4 million from 724 screens.

Several new releases made the top 10. “Six: The Musical Live” debuted in sixth with $3 million, followed by “The Brink of War” with $2.7 million. “Vishwanath & Sons,” a Tamil romance, earned $1.6 million, closing the top 10. The crime thriller “The Rivals of Amziah King” and Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony” also saw releases.

Summer box office revenues totaled over $4.2 billion, surpassing pre-pandemic 2019 by 5.7%. Paul Dergarabedian from Rentrak highlighted that this summer might not break 2013’s record of nearly $4.8 billion, but it ranks among the top five summers.

Overall, the year’s earnings are nearing $6.9 billion.
