Youth Preferences in the 2028 Presidential Race Poll

45 minutes ago 0

Former Vice President Kamala Harris leads the pack among young Democrats in a speculative 2028 presidential race, according to a new survey. Harris gained 28.7 percent support from Democratic respondents aged 18 to 34, nearly double the 14.9 percent for former first lady Michelle Obama. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), the progressive New York Democrat, received 11.7 percent. The poll, conducted by Axios-Generation Lab, surveyed 1,075 American adults aged 18-34 from July 29 to August 4. None of these three candidates have announced a campaign for 2028.

Preferences Among Young Independents and Republicans

Among young independents, Obama was favored, achieving 11.4 percent, followed by AOC at 9.2 percent, and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders at 7.4 percent. In the young Republican category, Vice President JD Vance led with 31.5 percent, with Donald Trump Jr. getting 10.7 percent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio earning 9.7 percent.

Survey Insights

“The thumbs-down on everything” mood reflects widespread dissatisfaction, noted Generation Lab CEO Cyrus Beschloss, pointing to discontent with the president, the economy, and political parties.

The survey revealed general disapproval among younger Americans towards President Donald Trump, with 66 percent expressing dissatisfaction. Furthermore, 96 percent expressed concerns about costs such as rent, groceries, and utilities. Participants included 37 percent Democrats, 26 percent Republicans, and 29 percent independents, with an overall margin of error of +/- 3.01 percentage points.

Analyzing Poll Results for Harris, Obama, and AOC

Harris’ support exceeded the combined backing for Obama and Ocasio-Cortez, yet she did not achieve a majority, highlighting an unsettled Democratic field. Harris is the only one among them with presidential race experience, having replaced Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket in 2024 and then losing to Trump. Despite refusing to run for California governor in 2026, Harris remains a potential White House candidate.

Michelle Obama, with no elected office experience, gained notable second-place support. She has reiterated that politics is not her preferred path and she does not desire the presidency, as shared in a 2018 event with students in New York.

Obama’s independent appeal exceeded her Democratic support relative to other candidates, leading independents with 11.4 percent. AOC followed with 9.2 percent, indicating Obama’s appeal beyond Democratic identifiers despite low digits.

AOC has risen as a leading progressive voice within the Democratic Party since her election to Congress in 2018. Her agenda includes initiatives on climate change, housing affordability, and economic inequality. Though prominent among younger progressives, she trails Harris by 17 points with young Democrats and is 3.2 points behind Obama.

Republican Challenges Among Young Americans

The poll highlighted strong opposition to Trump among young Americans, with 66 percent disapproving, including 54 percent strongly. Republicans fell behind Democrats when respondents considered party trust for reducing living costs, with 32 percent choosing Republicans versus 26 percent opting for Democrats. A significant 36 percent trusted neither party, presenting a 14-point lead for “neither” over the GOP.

This reflects major economic worries among respondents. Only a small fraction trusted the president’s party to lower essential expenses, indicating discontent with both parties rather than a shift toward Democrats.

Historically, polls have sometimes underestimated Trump’s appeal; he surpassed expectations in three presidential elections. Newsweek reached out to the White House for comments.

After Trump’s approval ratings hit a historic low in June, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle emphasized the importance of the upcoming 2024 election: “the ultimate poll.” Ingle asserted Trump’s substantial accomplishments for the American public, emphasizing efforts in job creation, inflation control, and housing cost reduction.
