Authorities Release Ransom Notes in Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping Case

Two ransom notes connected to the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie in Arizona have been released by local authorities, aiming to generate new leads in the case. Nancy Guthrie, 84, went missing from her Tucson home on February 1. She is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-host of NBC’s ‘TODAY.’

Details of the Ransom Notes

The second note, dated February 6, claimed that Guthrie passed away due to heart-related issues shortly after her abduction. It stated: ‘She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry.’

The first note, sent on February 2 to a local news outlet, mentioned that a white smart watch was found at the foot of her bed and noted the destruction of a backyard floodlight. This note demanded a ransom of $4 million in bitcoin by February 5 and stated that if the payment was delayed until February 9, the ransom would increase to $6 million. It warned, ‘Do not play games, law enforcement will not be able to help you.’ Guthrie was reportedly aware that ‘her life is in your hands.’

Authorities Seek Help From Public

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department released the notes to involve the public in identifying the note writer. They highlighted the notes’ ‘unique linguistic style’ with distinctive word choice and syntax, potentially recognizable to someone familiar with the writer. The release encouraged anyone with insight into the patterns of expression to aid in the investigation.

Emotional Plea from Savannah Guthrie

Following the release, Savannah Guthrie made a video plea, urging the kidnapper to disclose her mother’s location. ‘It has been months since our mom was taken from us. Our family is in agony,’ she expressed. ‘The world can be a cruel and unforgiving place. I am asking you to do the right thing now. Help us find her.’
