Disney and Epic Games Collaborate to Enhance Interactive Experiences

44 minutes ago 0

In a theatrical scene, a pirate’s face transforms from flesh to a visible skull, clutching cursed gold. Nearby, the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars presents a dynamic view of Tatooine dunes and Coruscant towers. Both utilize the software behind ‘Fortnite’, known as the Unreal Engine by Epic Games.

Epic Games has deepened its relationship with Walt Disney Co. Over several years, its Unreal Engine has been used in various Disney projects. These range from LED soundstages like those in ‘The Mandalorian’ to previsualization suites where rides are conceptualized. Now, it extends to ride vehicles and an integrated online game within ‘Fortnite’.

Disney’s Expanding Engagement with Epic Games

Sean Shoptaw, Disney’s executive vice president of Games and Digital Entertainment, emphasized the significance of this integration. The goal is to create strong connections between park experiences and immersive games. Disney’s collaboration with Epic focuses on engaging audiences amid growing entertainment competition.

Jessica Reif Ehrlich, a senior analyst at Bank of America, noted Disney’s focus on leveraging its intellectual property. The aim is to immerse consumers in Disney’s fictional worlds and interactions with its characters.

Investment and Further Collaboration

In 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games for a minority stake. This partnership focuses on creating a Disney entertainment universe connected with ‘Fortnite’. Despite layoffs at Epic Games, the collaboration continues. Bob Iger, former CEO, described it as a way to bond with new audiences.

Current CEO, Josh D’Amaro, prioritizes technology, with Disney+ as the digital center of Disney’s operations. He sees the Epic Games collaboration as a key part of reaching younger audiences in a gaming environment.

Unreal Engine’s Versatile Use

Epic’s Unreal Engine originally served game development. Its usage now spans various industries, including automotive design and media. Disney uses this technology widely, even incorporating it into Disneyland rides. Recent upgrades enhanced graphics, increasing appeal to Hollywood.

‘The Mandalorian’ used Unreal Engine for virtual sets on LED walls, eliminating complex location shoots. This marked a significant adoption of the technology in media outside gaming.

Bill Clifford, Epic’s senior VP of the Unreal Ecosystem, highlighted the role of extending intellectual property into interactive experiences. Many studios now expand their game content into ‘Fortnite’, theme parks, and theaters, showing a future direction for entertainment.

Interactive Experiences at Disneyland

In June, Disneyland introduced a new audio-animatronic in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, illustrating the technology’s impact. Margaret Kerrison, an author and former Disney Imagineer, stressed creating lifelike experiences through such technology.

The integration into Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, since its 2019 debut, created a dynamic window view in Han Solo’s ship. Unreal Engine 5 enhances this experience by providing a cinematic experience as pilots navigate iconic worlds.

The addition of the ‘Smugglers Gambit’ game in ‘Fortnite’ encourages player engagement with Disney’s theme parks. Visitors’ ride performances can lead to in-game rewards, linking physical and virtual experiences.

According to Clifford, starting stories in the park and continuing them in virtual games opens new possibilities for cross-media consumer experiences, previously unattainable.
