The Supreme Court has once more dismissed former President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a jury’s $5 million ruling. The jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll at a New York City department store in the mid-1990s. Trump had sought the court’s intervention after the initial refusal to hear his appeal. This latest denial was issued alongside other rejected petitions. It is uncommon for the court to accept such appeals.
Trump already paid the judgment after the Supreme Court declined his appeal in June. He and the Justice Department are requesting the court to dismiss a second verdict against him amounting to $83 million. They claim immunity for Trump regarding comments made during his presidency in 2019. The court has not decided on this appeal yet.
Carroll, known for her advice column and TV hosting, testified in a 2023 trial. She described a friendly meeting in the 90s that escalated into a violent incident in Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury store near Trump Tower in Manhattan. The jury found Trump defamed Carroll when he denied her claims in 2022. Trump continues to deny any misconduct.
The Associated Press follows a policy not to name individuals alleging sexual assault unless they publicly disclose their identities, which Carroll did.
