The British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, became involved in a communication issue involving someone impersonating the chief of staff of former U.S. President Donald Trump, according to recent reports. Burnham’s spokesperson chose not to comment, stating that regulations prevent discussion of national security matters.
An article published by Politico, based on information from four unnamed officials, revealed that Burnham initially believed he was communicating with Susie Wiles. Suspicion led to him cutting off communication soon after.
The White House stated that the incident did not involve any hacking of Wiles’ devices. Last year, an investigation began in the U.S. regarding messages sent to elected officials, business executives, and other prominent figures by someone impersonating Wiles.
The U.S. State Department soon alerted its diplomats about attempts to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio and potentially other officials using artificial intelligence.
This warning came after it was discovered that someone claiming to be Rubio tried to contact at least three foreign ministers, a U.S. senator, and a governor. The FBI had cautioned about ‘malicious actors’ using AI to impersonate government officials.
Burnham, who assumed office less than a month ago, aims to build positive relationships with the White House. Former President Trump initially welcomed Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer, but later distanced from him.
