Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham faced controversy after sharing her views on transgender athletes in women’s sports. This occurred on her birthday, causing quite the stir online.
Fans and sports analysts expressed differing opinions on Cunningham’s statements. Notably, Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve appeared to criticize Cunningham publicly by wearing a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt during a game against the Fever.
The incident led to a strong reaction across social media. Though the WNBA has not taken official action against Cunningham, she has been banned from the WNBA subreddit. This platform operates independently and is not connected to the league.
The subreddit, r/WNBA, now restricts users from mentioning Cunningham’s name or related terms like “Sophie,” “SC,” and variations. This decision was confirmed by a message from Reddit user Adventurous_Hope_101, who shared their correspondence with the forum’s moderator.
The moderator explained, “We filter content related to Sophie because it typically attracts trolls and non-fans of the W.” They suggested that those wanting to discuss Sophie should look for other subreddits.
When challenged about the decision, the moderator warned, “You are not a contributor to this sub. It’s advisable to return to other WNBA subs. Continuing this topic may result in a ban.”
The controversy surrounding Cunningham may lead to action from the league. Recently, WNBA team presidents convened to discuss transgender eligibility policies following declarations from two former male NBA players for the 2027 WNBA draft.
