Rep. Nick Begich, a Republican from Alaska, is seeking re-election for his second term as the state’s sole House representative. Among the 14 candidates competing in the ranked-choice primary, his main competition comes from independent candidate Bill Hill. Hill, who has a background as a commercial fisherman and former school superintendent, has gained attention in the race.
Recently, the leading Democrat, Matt Schultz, decided to suspend his campaign. Schultz, who is known for his work as a pastor in Anchorage, chose to endorse Hill, adding an interesting dynamic to the contest.
Alaska’s open primary system is distinctive. It allows all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, to appear on the ballot. This setup means the top four candidates will move forward to the general election, making the primary a crucial stage for each candidate.
