Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey expressed strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s new Iran memorandum of understanding (MOU) during his appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Booker labeled the agreement as an “abject surrender,” asserting that Trump is perceived as the “biggest loser” globally following his decision to end the war with Tehran.
Booker was critical of Trump, claiming he deserved no recognition for his efforts to end a conflict that Democrats have accused him of mishandling since its inception. “They know that they’ve won this,” Booker stated. “Donald Trump is perhaps, on the world stage right now, the biggest loser with egg on his face,” Booker told NBC’s Garrett Haake.
Booker also targeted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing concern over U.S. intelligence reports suggesting Israel might attempt to undermine the emerging agreement. He described both Trump and Netanyahu as “failed world leaders” and voiced a desire for them to exit the world stage.
The senator revealed he had voted multiple times to end the war and argued the MOU favors Iran while limiting American options. “Let’s be clear. I do not support this deal that he made, which was an abject surrender,” he asserted.
Booker’s remarks criticize Trump for relinquishing U.S. leverage and failing to meet his initial objectives. He lamented the emerging perception of American fragility, stating, “What the world needs now is leadership, but from our Middle East allies to our NATO allies, I’m hearing over and over again, ‘Your president is a danger to the world.'”
Booker’s criticism contrasts with viewpoints like those from Democratic strategist James Carville, who suggested Trump deserved some commendation for concluding the war instead of escalating it. Booker, however, dismissed this notion, likening Trump to “literally an arsonist starting a fire and getting credit for running out of the burning building.”
He extended his censure to Congress, particularly Republicans who he accused of enabling Trump’s military actions without adequate opposition throughout the war’s development. “I’m really sorry that congressional Republicans from the start of this war have allowed him to do everything he wanted to do, and now they’re crying foul because they don’t like the results,” Booker remarked, “Shame on Congress.”
In response, White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales defended the administration’s strategies, saying, “Following the historic destruction of Iran’s military capabilities through the successful Operation Epic Fury, President Trump and his negotiating team have brokered an excellent, performance-based MOU that advances the interests of the United States by ending the fighting, reopening the Strait of Hormuz to significantly lower energy prices, and forcing Iran to commit to abandon its nuclear ambitions. What the President has achieved on the battlefield and at the negotiating table is nothing short of remarkable and will strengthen American security for many years to come.”
