Missouri Judge Upholds GOP Redistricting Victory

43 minutes ago 0

A Missouri judge has ruled in favor of President Donald Trump and Republicans, allowing a GOP-friendly congressional map to remain effective for the upcoming midterm elections. The decision by Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green supports the stance of Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins, ruling that the state’s referendum process cannot challenge congressional maps approved by the Legislature.

The ruling means that Hoskins’ decision not to certify the referendum petition stands, allowing the Republican-backed map to be enforced for the 2026 general election. This decision follows efforts by Trump urging Republican-led states to redraw congressional boundaries in their favor ahead of the elections.

The redistricting aims to provide Republicans with an opportunity to challenge Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver in Kansas City. The current congressional delegation of Missouri includes six Republicans and two Democrats, and the new map splits parts of Kansas City into neighboring Republican districts while extending Cleaver’s district into Republican-dominated rural areas. The Associated Press estimates that about 59% of voters in this altered district are new to it.

Republican state Sen. Rick Brattin secured the GOP primary nomination in the revised district, while Cleaver ran unopposed for the Democratic ticket. Despite opponents collecting numerous signatures for a referendum on the map, the petition was dismissed by Hoskins, citing constitutional grounds.

Judge Green sided with Hoskins and several Republican committees that intervened, maintaining the map as legal for use. This Missouri case is part of a broader national redistricting effort spearheaded by Republicans following Trump’s call to action. The ruling sees Missouri join Texas as the second Republican-led state to pursue new congressional lines in response to this initiative.

The case is expected to advance to the appeals court, with efforts being monitored by national interests. The White House has yet to provide a comment on this development.
