A tragic incident occurred in Sokoto, Nigeria, where a boat capsized, resulting in the death of at least 47 people. The passengers were en route to farms in Gorau town, located within the Goronyo local government area.
Details of the Incident
The boat, carrying more than 80 individuals, was heading to agricultural areas. Abdulkadir Yusuf, the state manager for the National Inland Waterways Authority, confirmed the current death toll as 47.
During the rainy season, most women and children go to the farm to work,
explained Samaila Garba, a 55-year-old resident. He sadly reported that his granddaughter, 13-year-old Jamila Usman, was among the victims, with most casualties being women and children. Garba counted 42 bodies in the aftermath.
Aminu Dan Hajiya, another resident, shared his relief at not being aboard the ill-fated vessel, mentioning the widespread impact on the community.
Community leader Usman Yusuf confirmed that over 80 passengers were on the vessel. So far, 41 of them have been buried.
Common Occurrence and Contributing Factors
Boat accidents are frequent in Nigeria, especially during the rainy season. Safety regulations are often poorly enforced, allowing unsafe boats without life jackets to operate. A similar incident in January took 25 lives in Yobe state.
