Reno Wildfire Threatens Neighborhoods, Forces Mass Evacuations

1 month ago 0

A wildfire that expanded drastically in the Sierra Nevada foothills has prompted urgent evacuations in Reno, Nevada. Over 90,000 residents have been urged to leave as flames approach residential areas. The fire, already responsible for burning several homes, is a major threat due to changing winds which could drive it toward new and densely populated neighborhoods on the outskirts of Nevada’s second-largest city.

On Monday, schools across the county closed to facilitate the evacuations and ensure emergency responders could operate efficiently. Authorities reported late Sunday that firefighters are containing hotspots and preventing the fire from crossing a major highway into densely populated regions. Since it started on Saturday, the Hawk Fire has rapidly spread over more than 23 square miles (60 square kilometers), reaching neighborhoods near the California state line. As of now, the fire remains uncontained.

There have been at least six injuries, including three first responders and three civilians. Fire officials indicated that the fire is “human-caused,” though details on whether it was set intentionally or accidentally remain unspecified. Social media videos display the devastation, with homes and vehicles reduced to ashes. Only charred remnants like a basketball hoop still stand in some areas. Many residents were caught off guard and evacuated quickly as the fire escalated.

“Honestly, I thought it was like in a movie,” said Ruby Delatorre, who had returned from a concert only to find her home in the evacuation zone. She returned on Sunday to salvage a few more personal items. “I literally want to cry and go back for all my stuff. I just got what I thought I needed,” she added.

For some, the fire seemed initially mistaken for another nearby wildfire smoldering for two weeks. Teresa Lenshyn described the chaotic and stressful experience of being evacuated, uncertain whether shifting winds would worsen the situation.

The Hawk Fire is the third major wildfire in the rugged terrain north of Reno in recent weeks, all attributed to human activities. Extremely dry conditions across the American West have intensified the wildfire season, prompting numerous fires.

Earlier in August, wildfires in eastern Washington state led to the evacuation of 60,000 individuals in the Spokane area. Nationwide, there have been over 50,000 wildfires, the highest count in the past decade for this period, as reported by the National Interagency Fire Center.
