Country music star Kacey Musgraves faced criticism after encouraging fans to support an immigrant children’s rights group during her recent concert. As she launched her ‘Middle of Nowhere’ tour on her 38th birthday, Musgraves paused her show at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, to ask for donations to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.
Musgraves explained, “It’s a wonderful organization; they provide legal aid and financial assistance to children whose parents have been deported unfairly. It’s not a political issue, but these kids need help.” She added that any contribution, even as small as 50 cents, would be appreciated.
The Grammy winner’s appeal received applause from the audience, but it sparked a divided response online. Conservative commentators like Tomi Lahren questioned what constituted ‘unfair deportations.’ Some social media users criticized Musgraves, accusing her of alienating fans and suggesting she donate her own money instead.
Musgraves reiterated her support for the organization on social media. She shared a message from the Young Center thanking her for her support. The Young Center pairs volunteers with attorneys and social workers to advocate for immigrant children in custody.
The organization reported serving nearly 2,000 children from around 53 countries and increasing the average detention time from 30 to 198 days. Musgraves extended her support in April by selling parts of her wardrobe to benefit the charity.
Despite the backlash, some fans defended Musgraves, praising her stance on helping children in need. The singer continues her North American tour, having already invited young performers whose family sought asylum to open her Texas shows.
Musgraves addressed claims of her having shouldered the family’s detention as federal law dictates custody for illegal aliens without valid entry, a point reinforced by DHS. Her comments came amid record immigration enforcement levels by ICE.
The Chicago concert kicked off her tour with Midland as the opening act, with dates scheduled through October.
