Hollywood Executive Praises Trump’s Efforts to Revitalize the Entertainment Industry

4 hours ago 0

In Los Angeles, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, expressed appreciation for President Donald Trump’s initiatives related to the entertainment sector during Bloomberg Screentime summit. A proposed federal tax credit, aiming to boost American jobs in this industry, was highlighted in the discussion.

Asked by Bloomberg News’ Lucas Shaw about his interactions with Trump, Sarandos responded positively. He emphasized Trump’s commitment to nurturing the entertainment business within the United States. Sarandos remarked, “He genuinely cares about the entertainment business, protecting the industry, and generating jobs here.”

The federal tax credit is intended to maintain film and television productions within the U.S. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada have attracted many Hollywood projects through tax credits, leading to cheaper production costs abroad compared to legacy studio backlots.

In August, Trump endorsed the federal tax incentive to encourage domestic film and TV productions. The proposal, which received bipartisan support, was formally introduced last week by Senator Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Senator Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

Sarandos expressed cautious optimism regarding the bill’s passage, citing potential uncertainties like the upcoming midterm elections. He commented, “It’s a bipartisan effort with proven effectiveness, offering significant returns on investment. The concern focuses on the political landscape, especially post-elections, and potential shifts in support.”

The Netflix executive criticized California for losing jobs over time due to complacency concerning local talents, outdated infrastructure, and challenges in film production within Los Angeles.

California has faced issues with film projects migrating elsewhere for easier and cheaper production setups. Sarandos stated challenges faced during recent productions, underscoring over $400 million spent in Los Angeles despite suboptimal incentives.
