White Sox Triumph Despite Peters Falling Short of Cycle

1 month ago 0

Peters Shines in Victory

Tristan Peters stepped up in the eighth inning with a chance to hit for the cycle for the second time this season. ‘I don’t know if you try to hit a triple,’ Peters remarked. ‘But I was trying.’ Instead, he walked on four pitches, settling for a three-hit game that included a home run for his fourth consecutive game. The Chicago White Sox defeated the Texas Rangers 11-7 in front of 19,892 fans at Rate Field.

Peters doubled in the first inning, singled in the fourth, and homered in the sixth. He also walked in the third and eighth innings, missing the cycle by a triple, which he had previously achieved on July 10 against the Athletics at Rate Field. Manager Will Venable praised him, saying, ‘He’s been outstanding. He’s in a really good spot. We’ve seen this from him before, but not the four homers in a row, which is special.’

Key Contributions to Early Lead

Peters played a crucial role in a six-run first inning sparked by Sam Antonacci’s bloop double down the left-field line. Munetaka Murakami walked and Miguel Vargas added a bloop single that eluded Wyatt Langford. The errant throw allowed Antonacci to score. An RBI single from Braden Montgomery made it 2-0, and Colson Montgomery’s walk loaded the bases. Peters then hit a broken-bat double, driving in two runs.

‘I was anticipating a fastball from Jacob deGrom,’ Peters said. ‘He didn’t throw it over the plate, showed a few changeups, and eventually a slider, so I aimed to keep my hands steady.’

Brenton Doyle followed with a two-run single, giving the Sox a 6-0 lead. ‘deGrom’s unlikely to give up much damage,’ Venable commented. ‘To string so many hits together early was exceptional.’ DeGrom was pulled after 3⅔ innings, having given up eight runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and five walks.

Sox Maintain Control

Sox starter Anthony Kay allowed four runs on six hits, with four strikeouts and two walks over 4⅔ innings. ‘I didn’t have great command of my changeup or slider today,’ Kay noted. ‘It’ll be addressed this week, and thankfully, the team provided good early support.’

Kay faced trouble in the fifth, allowing a two-run homer to Danny Jansen and an RBI single to Ezequiel Duran before exiting the game with two on base. Reliever Jordan Hicks struck out Jake Burger, preserving the 8-4 lead. The Sox extended their lead to 10-4 with two more runs in the fifth, though the Rangers responded with three in the sixth, making it 10-7. Justin Foscue’s two-run homer narrowed the gap.

Peters reinforced their lead with a solo homer in the sixth. ‘I know my power and my tendency to pull balls in the air,’ he said, referring to his home runs. He is close to tying the team’s longest consecutive home run streak record, shared by notable players like Murakami and Frank Thomas.

Game’s Conclusion

The Sox entered the ninth leading 11-7. The Rangers filled the bases with two outs, prompting the Sox to summon reliever Grant Taylor, who secured the final out.

‘The Rangers have a strong lineup,’ Venable said. ‘Anthony faced challenges in the fifth, which led to misalignments in the bullpen, but sufficient outs were secured to ensure victory.’
