Lee Greenwood, a prominent figure in country music, recalls the life and influence of Dolly Parton after her passing. He reflects on her modest start, her journey to fame, and the tributes celebrating her legacy.

Condolences and tributes surfaced after the death of the iconic Dolly Parton at 80. Among those honoring her was Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning, with ties to Tennessee like Parton, expressed his gratitude for knowing her. He shared a moment alongside Parton at a University of Tennessee game on Instagram, stating, “There was only one Dolly and I feel lucky to have known her.” Manning noted Tennessee would feel different without her.

Manning posted a picture of Parton performing “Rocky Top” at Neyland Stadium on November 18, 2023. The performance was notable, as the East Tennessee native delivered an exceptional version of the Vols’ signature song amid a loud, cheering crowd.

Parton’s presence in sports extended beyond university games. After her appearance in Knoxville, she performed at AT&T Stadium in Dallas for a 2023 Thanksgiving event. At 77, she dressed in a dazzling Cowboys cheerleader outfit and received praise for her performance. Her setlist included classics like “Jolene” and “9 to 5,” along with Queen’s “We Are The Champions.” Parton shared with USA TODAY her apprehension about the performance, emphasizing her drive to perform over any fear.

Dolly Parton passed away peacefully in Nashville, as confirmed in a press release. Her nephew, Brin Seaver, also shared the news through a video. Parton had been facing an unspecified health challenge in her final months.

Parton’s contributions extended beyond music. She was an actress, philanthropist, businesswoman, and humanitarian. Her career was adorned with 11 Grammy Awards, three Emmy Awards, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. She also earned nominations for six Golden Globes, a Tony, and two Academy Awards.

She shared nearly 60 years of marriage with Carl Dean, maintaining their relationship mostly out of the public spotlight. Dean passed away in March 2025.

In accordance with Parton’s wishes, a private service will be organized for her immediate family. The family prefers donations to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library instead of flowers.
