Two years ago, Mya Donnelly was a freshman on the varsity volleyball team at Lincoln-Way Central. She recalls learning from the older players and now, as a 5-foot-11 junior outside hitter, she guides younger teammates. Freshman Erin Sammon joins sophomores Leah Freiberg, Madison Rademacher, Tessa Garcia, and Zoey Terrell under Donnelly’s mentorship.
Donnelly reflects, “I had girls who were leaders for me and now I guide the underclassmen. It’s rewarding. I remember being scared as a freshman.” Those feelings are behind her; she now poses a threat to opponents. In a match against Class 2A power Chicago Christian, Donnelly delivered 11 kills, including eight in a pivotal second game, leading to a 14-25, 25-14, 25-20 victory. Ella Thompson added seven kills, Terrell served four aces, Garcia provided 11 assists, and Isabella Bendoraitis contributed 10 assists for Lincoln-Way Central (1-0). For Chicago Christian (0-1), Quinn Grevengoed led with 12 kills, while Ella Agema added nine, and Grace Gordon served six aces.
After dropping the first game by 11 points, Donnelly shifted momentum with three kills in a four-point sequence. Lincoln-Way Central gained an 8-5 lead and maintained control. “I felt a click and knew I needed to play with leadership and confidence,” Donnelly shared. “Hitting down the line is my strength, and I aimed for it until they altered their block.”
Bendoraitis also excelled at the service line, scoring six consecutive points, including three aces, to conclude the second game. Thompson was strong in the final game with four kills, while Terrell contributed three aces, two kills, and a block.
Donnelly evaluated the team’s early struggles, stating, “In the first set, we struggled with connection and serve-receive. Afterwards, we played much better, and our bench stayed vocal. We lost many seniors, so I didn’t know what to expect this season, but I’m pleased with our start.”
Bendoraitis praised Donnelly’s pivotal role in their comeback. “Mya excelled in the second set, helping us win the last two sets. Her swing is likely the best on the team. She reads the ball well.”
Coach Amy Bernhard noticed initial nerves, but credited improved sets from Bendoraitis and Garcia for their offensive success. “Mya’s run made a difference. I’ve coached her long enough to see her as a leader despite not yet being a senior.”
Donnelly began playing volleyball in the second grade after disliking cheerleading. She explained, “I hated cheerleading, so my mom tried volleyball. I’ve loved it since.” She values the team dynamics both on and off the court. “Being close to my teammates helps mentally. It’s enjoyable due to the team culture and showcasing my abilities.”
