Introduction to the MV11 Drone
Ukraine has introduced a groundbreaking sea drone, the MV11, designed to transport and launch other uncrewed vehicles from the open sea. Dubbed the ‘drone aircraft carrier,’ this innovation by Ukrainian defense start-up UFORCE was showcased during a parade in Kyiv on Ukraine’s independence day.
“We are confident that the MV11 will become the backbone of many successful missions and contribute to further pushing back the enemy,” said Oleh Rohynskyi, CEO of UFORCE, as reported by Militarnyi.
The Military Strategy Behind Ukrainian Sea Drones
Ukraine’s military strategy has focused on utilizing long-range missiles and drones to target Russian forces in the Black Sea, compensating for the absence of large naval forces. Sea drones are versatile; they serve as kamikaze weapons and conduct reconnaissance missions. These drones travel low in the water, avoiding radar detection, making them effective against Russian defenses.
Russia’s Response to Ukraine’s Drone Success
Reacting to Ukraine’s achievements, Russia has invested in developing its own fleet of Unscrewed Surface Vessels (USVs). Estonian intelligence reports that Russia is organizing attack-focused USV units within its naval fleets and Caspian Flotilla.
UFORCE, renowned for creating the Magura sea drone series, collaborates with Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence, utilizing these drones to target Russian ships in the Black Sea. Ukraine’s SBU security agency uses the SeaBaby USV design for similar purposes.
The Magura MV11: Features and Capabilities
The Magura MV11, the largest in the Magura drones family, boasts significant advancements. These models undergo upgrades and can be armed with guns and surface-to-air missiles. Rohynskyi emphasized that the MV11 is pivotal because it can transport and launch multiple unmanned systems, allowing operations far from the shore across various domains.
Ukrainian media reports that the drone can operate at sea for up to a week, carrying around 2,200 kilograms of sensors, fuel, missiles, or other drones. The MV11 can deploy up to 18 Sting interceptor drones equipped with small explosive warheads and features a fixed camera to assist navigation.
Impact on Ukraine’s Military Operations
While the MV11 may not drastically change Ukraine’s established drone operations against Russian forces, it represents a valuable addition to the Black Sea forces. Steve Wright, a U.K.-based drone expert, remarked that the MV11’s ability to linger in an area away from base allows it to deny enemy access effectively.
NATO closely monitors Ukraine’s use of naval drones, acknowledging its significance. A joint NATO-Ukrainian group revealed that Ukrainian military experts briefed NATO officials on USVs’ roles in the Black Sea.
ReconCraft, a U.S.-based manufacturer for special operations forces, has agreed to produce Magura USVs in the U.S. following a memorandum of understanding signed in Washington, according to The Wall Street Journal.
