Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton does not hold back when it comes to inaccurate sports TV analysis. His recent response to former NFL player Geoff Schwartz’s comments about quarterback Bo Nix highlights this.
Schwartz, now a TV analyst, discussed Nix on ‘First Things First’. He argued that Nix had not changed much since college, stating, “He looks like the same quarterback he was in college… He’s consistent. He’s not gonna make mistakes. But he’s not gonna push the ball down the field all that often.”
The segment prompted a Community Note that corrected Schwartz’s perspective. It stated, “Nix has thrown the most touchdown passes of 20-plus air yards in the NFL since the start of the 2024 season, with 19 including the postseason.”
This information countered Schwartz’s claim, suggesting he overlooked important statistics. Despite his view that Nix might not be a complete player yet, denying his ability to pass long distances ignores how the Broncos have utilized him.
Payton noticed Schwartz’s remarks and offered a pointed critique. He remarked, “Always easy to tell who works at it and who doesn’t,” indicating his disapproval of Schwartz’s analysis.
The episode emphasizes the expectation for former players to provide insights beyond typical debate-show narratives. Schwartz’s assertion that Nix is limited in downfield plays clashes with factual data. While debating Nix’s capabilities is valid, labeling him as a quarterback who seldom throws deep does not align with reality.
In this instance, Schwartz’s comment did not withstand scrutiny.
