Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Gains Momentum in Alabama

1 month ago 0

Following the recent passing of Dolly Parton, her Imagination Library initiative in Alabama is seeing growing support. Residents are backing a specialty license plate to fund the program statewide.

Parton, who passed away at 80, was renowned not only for her music but also for her philanthropy. The Imagination Library is one of her significant contributions. The program gives free books to children from birth until age five.

“It’s exploded over the last 24 hours,” said Kaelyn Christian, state director for the Imagination Library in Alabama. “I’m confident we’ll hit that 1,000 mark.”

Christian noted that as of Wednesday, there were over 550 pre-commitments for the plate. This moves closer to the 1,000 needed for production. Each plate would contribute about $50 to local Imagination Library programs, allowing continuous financial support.

The Imagination Library began in 1995, in honor of Parton’s father who was not able to read or write. It currently serves around 114,000 children in Alabama. In response to recent events, new registrations have surged.

Christian explained the impact of the program, noting, “A specialty plate covers the monthly books for two kids for nearly two years.” The initiative has enhanced children’s excitement for reading as they receive a new book each month.

Beyond numbers, Christian shared stories of families experiencing long-term benefits. One parent remarked on their child’s newfound love for reading due to the program, showing the real-world effects of Parton’s legacy.

Christian emphasized the ongoing benefit that the license plates could provide. They offer financial support to program partners who manage registrations, community engagement, and fundraising.

Recently, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced an expansion of the Imagination Library. By early 2025, the program will serve all 67 counties, with state financial backing for half of enrolled children.
